In the next month or so we shall be advertising for a 12-month postdoc research position on the theme of resilience and livelihoods in upland villages in Nepal and Myanmar. We are asking for anyone who might be interested to contact us so we keep in touch for when we advertise this position, probably towards the end of this calendar year.
The research is funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, and is part of a wider initiative to analyze the meaning of resilience in the context of environment and development, including climate change policy. This specific work will be to analyze the contribution of access to diverse livelihoods on the nature of environmental risk in poorer, upland villages in two districts of both Nepal and Myanmar, and to draw lessons for official assessments of risk/ adaptation, as well as debates about livelihood security and transitions. A key part of the work will be identifying the social causes of different experiences of risk. The postdoc will be part of a small team involving full-time staff at the LSE, Oxford, and UEA.
The key requirements for the postdoc will be:
—A PhD (or very near completion of)
—Experience of working in villages
—A willingness and ability to get on with fieldwork in different zones (to be decided), often for weeks at a time, in collaboration with the rest of the team and local assisting organizations and translators (if needed)
—It is likely that some of the time would be based at the LSE in London, UK
—Any relevant discipline will be considered: the main requirement is the ability to collect field-based information in a locally sensitive way, using a combination of surveys, interviews, and participatory work if feasible.
